Chin Filler in Plaistow, NH: Why It’s One of My Patient Favorites

Written by Joy DeRoche, NP. Board-certified Nurse Practitioner and owner of Joyful Beauty NP in Plaistow, NH. Practicing aesthetic medicine since 2015 and former Preceptor who trained injectors for five large med spa chains.

There’s a moment that happens in my treatment room more often than you’d think. Someone pulls up a side-profile photo on their phone, turns the screen toward me, and says, “I just don’t love my chin.”

I always smile, because I know exactly what they’re seeing. I also know how much of a difference a small, thoughtful change can make.

Chin filler has become one of my favorite dermal filler treatments to perform. It’s one of the most subtle ways I know to change how your whole face is framed.

I’ve been performing filler treatments since 2015. I also spent years teaching facial balancing techniques to other injectors as a Preceptor. Here’s everything I want you to know before you book.

Why the Chin Matters So Much

Your chin is the anchor of your lower face. When it sits a little behind the rest of your features, everything around it can look slightly off.

  • The nose can seem more prominent.
  • The jawline can look softer.
  • The neck can look less defined.
  • The lips can look more pushed forward.

Nothing is “wrong.” The balance just isn’t quite there.

A small amount of filler placed in the right spot can bring the chin forward. It gives the profile a cleaner line. The nose looks more proportional, and the jawline looks sharper.

Patients often tell me they can’t put their finger on what changed. They just like what they see.

How I Evaluate Your Profile

Facial balancing isn’t about following a trend. It’s about proportions that fit your face. At your consultation, I look at:

  • Your side profile. Where your chin sits in relation to your lips and nose.
  • Your front view. The width and shape of your chin, and how it fits your face shape.
  • Your jawline. Whether adding definition along the jaw would help the chin look its best.
  • Your whole face. Sometimes the best result comes from treating two areas together, like the chin and the jaw.

I’ll show you in the mirror what I see and why. We agree on a plan together before anything happens.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Chin filler tends to work beautifully for people who:

  • Have a chin that sits slightly back or looks short from the side
  • Want more definition along the jawline
  • Want to improve facial balance without surgery or implants
  • Want a result that looks natural, not “done”

I’ll also be honest with you if it isn’t the right fit.

If what bothers you is fullness under the chin, that’s often a different conversation. Kybella may be a better answer. If you have a very strong chin muscle that causes dimpling, a neuromodulator may help too. If I think a different treatment will serve you better, I’ll tell you. That’s what the consultation is for.

I don’t treat with filler during pregnancy or breastfeeding. I’ll also review your health history, medications, and any past filler before we start.

Chin Filler vs. a Chin Implant

Many patients ask me how filler compares to surgery. Here is how I explain it:

  • Filler involves no surgery and little to no downtime. Results are adjustable and can be dissolved if needed. It needs maintenance over time.
  • An implant is a surgical procedure with a longer recovery. It is a more permanent change.

For many people, filler is a great way to see how a stronger chin feels before considering anything permanent.

What the Appointment Is Like

  • Photos. I take before photos from the front and the side.
  • Mapping. I mark exactly where I plan to place filler and walk you through it.
  • Cleansing. I clean the skin carefully to help prevent infection.
  • Comfort. The filler I use contains lidocaine, a local numbing medicine. Most patients feel pressure more than pain.
  • Treatment. I place small amounts with a very deliberate technique. Depending on your anatomy, I may use a fine needle or a blunt-tip cannula.
  • Review. I check your profile from every angle and show you the result in the mirror.

The treatment itself takes about 20 to 30 minutes. I’d rather build gradually than overdo it. You can always add more, but it’s harder to take away.

Aftercare Tips

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Skip alcohol for the first 24 hours to help reduce swelling.
  • Don’t press on, massage, or rest your chin on your hand unless I tell you to.
  • Avoid dental work, facials, and lasers for about two weeks.
  • Sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated the first night.

What Results Look Like

  • Right away: You see a difference in your profile.
  • Day 1 to 3: Some swelling, tenderness, or bruising is common.
  • Week 2: Swelling settles, and you see your true result. I like to check in at this point.

Chin filler often lasts longer than filler in other areas. Many patients enjoy their results for a year or more. How long it lasts depends on the product and your own body. We’ll plan maintenance together.

Let’s Talk About Safety

Like any injectable treatment, chin filler can cause temporary swelling, tenderness, or bruising.

Why your injector matters. The chin and jaw sit near important blood vessels. Serious complications are rare, but they are real. I inject slowly and in small amounts, and I watch your skin the entire time. I keep hyaluronidase, the enzyme that dissolves filler, in the office at every appointment. I know how to use it quickly if it’s ever needed.

Call me right away if you notice pain that gets worse instead of better, skin that looks white, gray, or purple near the area, or a lump that is hot and red. I give every patient a way to reach me after their appointment.

Chin Filler FAQs

Most patients feel pressure more than pain. The filler contains lidocaine to numb the area as I work, and the treatment is quick.

It depends on your anatomy and goals. Many patients need one to two syringes to see a meaningful change. I’ll recommend an amount at your consultation and start conservatively.

Many patients enjoy their results for a year or more. The chin moves less than the lips, so filler there tends to last longer. Your results depend on the product and your body.

Usually not. The goal is better balance, not a dramatic change. Most people notice you look more polished but can’t tell why.

Yes. Bringing the chin forward often makes the jawline look sharper. Some patients also benefit from filler along the jaw. We’ll decide together what fits your face.

Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if needed. This is one reason I recommend it for first-timers.

Very little. Most patients go back to work the same day. You may have some swelling or bruising for a few days.
